Women’s tennis team plays at Div. 2 University of Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. — The Bates College women’s tennis team opened its spring season on Thursday at the University of Tampa, ranked No. 28 in Division II. The Bobcats made a strong debut against a tough opponent, ultimately losing by a 7-2 score at the UT Tennis Complex.

The host Spartans won all seven singles matches, but Bates prevailed in two out of three doubles matches. Sophomore Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) and junior Caryn Benisch (Huntington, N.Y.) teamed up to defeat Estefania Greco and Lindsey Garyn by a 9-8, 7-5 score at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, meanwhile, seniors Mallika Raghavan (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Liz Fleming (Weston, Conn.) scored a 9-8, 8-6 victory over Tampa’s Caitlin Scudder and Emily Kennedy.

Bates (1-2) will play host to MIT at Merrill Indoor Gymnasium on March 1 at 1 p.m.
