Bates rowing teams dominate Stetson Sprints

DELAND, Fla. — The Bates College men’s and women’s rowing teams had an outstanding early start to the spring 2008 season Saturday at the Stetson University Sprints. The Bobcats took first place in three of four races and were second in the fourth.

The Bates men’s Varsity 8+ took first place in a five-boat field in the Men’s Collegiate Varsity 8+ race with a time of 6:14.5, over 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Florida as well as Rollins and Stetson.

The Bates women’s Varsity 8+ took second place out of seven boats in the Women’s Collegiate Varsity 8+ race, behind Nova Southeastern  (7:13.2) by less than seven seconds and ahead of Barry, Rollins, Florida and Stetson.

Bates also took the Women’s Collegiate JV/Lightweight 8+ race head-to-head against Stetson, winning 8:13.0 to 8:47.4, and the Bobcat men claimed first place in the Men’s Collegiate JV race, ahead of Florida 6:46.8 to 6:53.8.

Bates’ next scheduled event is April 12 at Tufts with Wesleyan and New Hampshire.
