MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Bates first-year Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) led the Bates women’s alpine ski team to fifth place as a unit Saturday in the giant slalom, as the Middlebury Winter Carnival and Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships came to a close.

Bates placed fifth out of 15 teams at the carnival, for the team’s third fifth-place showing this season. The Bobcat alpine and Nordic teams combined for 754.5 points, behind only Dartmouth (928), Middlebury (906), Vermont (868.5) and New Hampshire (796), and ahead of rivals Williams (732) and Colby (710.5). Bates now waits to find out who has made the final cut to compete at the NCAA Championships March 5-8 in Bozeman, Mont.

Holland recorded a two-run combined time of 2:02.87 for a season-best ninth-place finish out of 60 competitors in the GS. Junior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) finished 21st in 2:04.98 and junior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) rounded out the women’s scoring in 23rd place (2:05.40).

Bates senior Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) led the Bates men in the GS, placing eighth out of 60 competitors with a combined time of 1:57.24. Senior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) came in 31st and senior Kevin Berry (Portsmouth, N.H.) was 35th to round out Bates’ scoring in the event.

In Friday’s slaloms at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, Sampson led three women in the top 16 for the Bobcats in the women’s slalom, leading the Bates women to fifth place in the event.

Sampson finished seventh out of 71 competitors in the women’s slalom, registering a two-run combined time of 1:39.90 to score 39 points for Bates. Holland was close behind in 1:41.89, good for 13th place, and Thompson took 16th place in 1:42.15.

Menard led the Bates men’s alpine team to seventh place in the slalom, finishing tied for 10th place with New Hampshire’s William Ford out of 72 competitors on the day, with a two-run combined time of 1:32.54. First-years Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) and Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) came in 26th and 27th, respectively, in 1:34.46 and 1:34.92.
