McNeil notches second top-five placing at ECAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Bates sophomore Rich McNeil placed fifth in the 35-pound weight throw Saturday to lead the Bobcats at the 2008 ECAC Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Harvard University.
McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) notched a top throw of 55’02.75″, fifth best out of a field of 23 competitors, scoring four team points to bring the team total to eight points for the meet, as Bates tied with RPI for 33rd out of 58 scoring teams.
Sophomore Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) placed 10th at 50’06.75″, senior Matthew Lopez (Lexington, Mass.) was 13th at 49’05.75″ and first-year Chris Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) was 16th at 46’07.50″.
Also on Saturday, Bates placed 13th in the 4×440-yard relay, with a time of 3:28.67.
In Friday’s action at the meet, McNeil and first-year Brett Epler both scored points for Bates.
McNeil placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 48’02.75″ to earn three team points for the Bobcats. Meanwhile Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) finished eighth in the pentathlon with 3,133 points. Epler excelled particularly in the 1,000 meters, with a fourth-best time of 2:46.47 (803 points).
Also competing for Bates on Friday:
- First-year Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) registered the 14th best time in the 55-meter dash preliminary heats with a time of 6.65 seconds.
- Senior captain Emmanuel Drabo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) placed 14th in the triple jump, with a top mark of 44’07.50″.
- Sophomore Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) placed 20th in the 5,000-meter run, with a time of 15:32.27.
