Baseball sweeps doubleheader vs. UMPI in Connecticut

DARIEN, Conn. — The Bates College baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader against the University of Maine Presque Isle Saturday, 19-2 in Game 1 and 9-0 in Game 2. Bates hosted the game, which was resited to Darien High School.

Senior 1B Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) went 2-3, including a two-run home run, and senior righthander Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) moved to 2-0 on the year in Game 1, going five innings before giving way to first-year Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.), who pitched one inning of relief before the game was called by mercy rule.

Senior 2B Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) and senior C Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) each went 2-4 at the plate, while senior DH Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) went 1-2 and drew three walks in the co-captain’s return to his alma mater.

Sophomore lefthander Custer Cook (Philadelphia, Pa.) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of Game 2, before allowing the Owls their first hit and being relieved by junior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.).

Senior SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 3-4 with 4 RBIs in the game. Hood also went 3-4 and senior co-captain OF Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) went 2-3.

Bates (3-4) will next play at Tufts University on Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m. to start a three-game series that was originally slated to be played at Bates.
