Bates rowing impressive vs. Wesleyan, New Hampshire
MALDEN, Mass. — The Bates College women’s rowing varsity eight, ranked fourth in this week’s Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III women’s poll, lived up to advance billing with a pair of victories Saturday over the University of New Hampshire and Wesleyan University on Saturday on Tufts University’s Malden River course.
The Bates women’s varsity eight, which is also ranked fifth among all divisions in New England, scored a 6:42.03 to 7:04.73 victory over No. 10 Wesleyan and also outrowed No. 3 New Hampshire 6:35.33 to 6:39.69.
Meanwhile the Bates men’s varsity eight, ranked sixth in the all-divisions New England Rowing Championships Coaches Poll, outpaced the host Jumbos by nearly 10 seconds in one race, 5:56.48 to 6:06.11, but was outrowed by New Hampshire 6:07.36 to 6:13.99 in another race.
In other races, the Bates men’s second varsity eight defeated Tufts 6:19.20 to 6:34.16 and was nipped by Wesleyan 5:59.47 to 6:03.93. The women’s second varsity eight was edged by New Hampshire 6:59.19 to 7:06.45 and by Tufts 6:53.97 to 6:58.18.
Bates rows tomorrow at Worcester, Mass., with crews from WPI, URI, Simmons and Wellesley.
