LEWISTON, Maine — Colin Riggs hit two home runs and Colby College banged out 18 hits in an 11-6 defeat of Bates College in NESCAC East Division baseall contest Friday at Leahey Field.
Colby (11-10, 1-5 NESCAC East) and Bates (5-15, 1-6 NESCAC East) will face each other in a doubleheader at Colby tomorrow at noon.
Riggs, who scored four runs and drove in four more, was one of four Mules who went 3-5 at the plate, along with John LaMantia, Kyle McKay and Nick Spillane. McKay and Riggs both hit homers in the sixth inning off of Bates reliever Ralph Vitti for a 7-2 lead the Mules didn’t relinquish.
The Mules chased Bates starter Sean VanderVliet (3-3) in the fourth inning, with a 4-2 lead, but Vitti got out of a two-on, no-outs jam by inducing a fly ball and a double play. But with three runs in the sixth followed by four runs in the seventh, the Mules threatened to put the game out of reach.
Bates answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a pair of bases-loaded, two-run singles by Denis Hogan and Brian Mahoney off of Colby reliever Ryan Murphy. Three of those runs were charged to Colby starter Sam Kennedy-Smith (2-2), who earned the win by going 5 1/3 innings while allowing five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four.
Bates lefthander Simon Griesbach shut the Mules down over the final 3 2/3 innings, striking out five, but the Bobcats were unable to make up the difference. Bobby Whelan notched the final five outs for Colby to ice the win.
Tom Beaton batted 3-3 for Bates, which totaled 11 hits in the game. Mahoney and Jake Simon each added a pair of hits, while Hogan went 1-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
Spillane drove in four runs for the Mules. Craig Cooper went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
