Saniuk homers as softball falls at Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Bowdoin College softball team rapped out 13 hits en route to a 7-3 win over Bates on Monday afternoon. With their NESCAC East Division win, the Polar Bears (21-8, 4-5 NESCAC East) take two out of three this season from Bates (5-17, 2-7 NESCAC East).
Kaitee Daley got the Bowdoin offense going in the first inning with a bunt hit, a stolen base and a move to third on a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a throwing error later in the inning to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Bates junior Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) tied the score with an RBI single for Bates in the top of the third before a Bowdoin rally in the bottom of the frame pushed the Polar Bears ahead for good.
A Lauren Coven triple scored Daley from first before Molly Nestor doubled to score Coven. Alison Coleman hit a line-drive up the middle that deflected off the leg of Bates first-year pitcher Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) and into the outfield, chasing the freshman pitcher from the game and scoring Nestor to give Bowdoin a 4-1 edge. Nestor lashed a two-run single that capped a three-run sixth for the Polar Bears that pushed the lead to 7-2. A seventh-inning home run to left by Bates junior Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) closed out the scoring. Saniuk’s fifth homer this season extended her Bates career homers record to 17.
Karen Reni (11-3) twirled a complete game, allowing just two earned runs while striking out nine. Daley and Emma Powers led Bowdoin with three hits apiece.
Sophomore Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) led the Bobcats with three hits. Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) and first-year Kim Neubert (North Haven, Conn.) each went 2-3. Cullen (Dover, Mass.) took the loss to dip to 3-5 this season, starting and going 2 1/3 innings before giving way to first-year Liz Johnston (Westport, Conn.) for the final 3 2/3.
Bates will next play a doubleheader at Amherst College tomorrow, starting at 4 p.m.
