LEWISTON, Maine — Jenny Rollins’ grand slam in the sixth inning put Husson College ahead for good, giving the Eagles a sweep over Bates College in non-conference softball Sunday at Lafayette Street Field. Husson won Game 1 5-0 and took Game 2 by a 12-7 score, raising the Eagles’ record this season to 28-10 while Bates dropped to 6-23.
First-year pitcher Tammie Arsenault (Gorham, Maine) blanked Bates in Game 1 with a complete-game shutout, scattering three hits and one walk while striking out four.
Bates senior Shayna Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) started for Bates and held the Eagles to only a single run until the sixth inning, when Husson plated three unearned runs on four hits and three Bates errors. Rollins singled down the right field line, and an error allowed senior Carolyn McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) to score all the way from first base. Husson then hit three straight singles off of Waldman to score two more unearned runs and Husson was on top 4-0. Bates first-year pitcher Hannah Dwan (Litchfield, Conn.) came on to strike out sophomore Brittni Adams (Bucksport, Maine) and end the inning, but the Eagles added one more unearned run in the seventh when sophomore Cassie Berry (Newcastle, Maine) came home on Bates’ fourth error of the game.
First-year Dorothy Cameron (South Plainfield, N.J.), Berry and Rollins were all 2-4 in Game 1 as Husson rapped out nine hits in all. Bates junior Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.), Waldman and sophomore Liz Stahler (Lyndonville, Vt.) each had a hit for Bates.
Bates got the bats going immediately in Game 2, running out to an early lead with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first. Saniuk hit an RBI double early in the inning and first-year OF/P Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) finished off the scoring with a two-run single off of Husson first-year starter Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, Maine).
Husson scored two in the top of the first. After Megan Bradstreet singled and later came home on an error, Husson senior catcher Shawna Bell (Corinth, Maine) fouled off a pitch and the ball struck her in the eye in the top of the first inning. Bell left the game for pinch hitter Cameron, who hit an RBI single up the middle.
Bates got another run in the third on senior Alex Bethel’s (Aspen, Colo.) RBI triple, but Bethel was caught in a rundown between third and home to end the inning. Husson got the margin back to three in the fourth, when Cameron reached on an error and came home on a Rollins groundout.
Bates still had the 6-3 lead heading into the sixth, when Bates first-year starter Liz Johnston (Westport, Conn.) ran into trouble immediately. Berry doubled down the left field line to lead off, followed by a walk to McAvoy, and a single by Cameron loaded the bases for Rollins. Rollins blasted a pitch into the power alley in left center to clear the bases and put Husson on top 7-6.
Dwan came on and got the Bobcats out of the inning without any further damage, but Husson wasn’t done scoring.
The Eagles plated five more runs in the top of the seventh. They loaded the bases and scored on sophomore Jenika Kelley’s (Jay, Maine) RBI walk. Johnston re-entered the game and hit Megan Richard (Wilton, Maine) with a pitch for another Husson run, and first-year Megan Bradstreet’s (Warren, Maine) three-run triple made it 12-6.
Bates added a single run in the seventh on a one-run single by Bethel, her third RBI of the game.
Rollins, Bradstreet and Cameron were all 2-4 for Husson in Game 2, with Rollins driving in five runs and Bradstreet tallying three RBIs. Bates junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.), sophomore Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) and Bethel all went 2-4 for Bates, which was even with Husson in hits with nine.
Bates finishes its season with a doubleheader against Southern Maine tomorrow, starting at 3:30 p.m.
