|Erik Hood ’08 hit his second homer of the season in the eighth.|
LEWISTON, Maine — Colby College struck for eight runs in the third inning to wipe out a 4-0 Bates lead and went on to a 15-8 non-conference baseball victory at Bates College Wednesday at Leahey Field.
The Mules (17-13) took three out of four games against their in-state rivals this season, while Bates falls to 10-20.
Colby senior Colin Riggs (Duxbury, Mass.) went 4-6 with four RBIs and two runs for Colby, which collected 15 hits in the game. Sophomore John LaMantia (Gates Mills, Ohio) went 3-5 with three runs and three RBIs, and first-year Richard Newton (Arlington, Mass.) also drove in three runs, including a two-run double in the third.
Colby sophomore Matt Moore (Winfield, Ill.) earned the win in relief of senior starter Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, Mass.), who lasted 3.2 innings and allowed six runs (four earned). Moore went 3.1 innings for the Mules and was charged with just one unearned run while striking out three. Moore earned the win to raise his record to 3-5.
Bates first-year starter Ryan Heide (Medfield, Mass.) dipped to 1-4 with the loss. Colby got to Heide via nicks and scrapes, with a series of bloop and seeing-eye hits interspersed with Newton’s two-run double. Colby had seven hits in the inning, six of them off of Heide, who gave way to senior LHP Simon Griesbach (West Bend, Wis.).
Bates went on top with four runs in the second inning. The rally started with Kennedy-Smith’s first pitch of the inning, which Bates first-year 3B Jake Simon (Waterford, Conn.) drove over the right-field fence for an opposite-field home run, his second homer of the season. The Bobcats went on to load the bases with one out for senior CF Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.), who drove in senior DH Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.). Sophomore 2B Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) followed with an RBI single, and a second run came home on the play on a throwing error.
Colby led 9-6 heading into the sixth, but the Mules virtually put the game out of reach with four runs in the inning, including a two-run single by Riggs, a sacrifice fly by Newton and a bases-loaded walk issued to first-year John Lerner (Canton, Mass.).
Bates senior 1B Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) hit a solo homer to left in the eighth, his second of the season.
Simon, who was hit by two pitches and walked once, was 2-2 in the game with three runs. Senior C Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) went 3-5 with a run and an RBI, and Beaton was 2-5.
Bates senior Dan Bousquet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) delivered the finest pitching performance of the day for Bates, going 2.1 shutout innings and striking out four Mules. McCormack delivered one of the best defensive plays of the year, robbing Colby’s Nick Spillane of a hit with a all-out diving catch to end the Colby fourth inning.
Bates plays a doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington tomorrow at 1 p.m. Colby is slated to host UMaine-Presque Isle tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
