Stein, Rupasinghe set to represent host Bates at NCAAs

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) are one of 16 duos who will compete for the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship, which begin Friday at Bates’ Wallach Tennis Center.


Ranked eighth in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Stein and Rupasinghe will take on Oliver Gaines and Ryan DeSantis of Trinity (Tex.) University at 4 p.m., Gaines and DeSantis are 18-7 on the year. Neither pair received one of four seeds in the field.


Stein and Rupasinghe teamed up to go 20-9 as Bates’ top doubles pair this year, achieving a No. 3 ranking in the Northeast as well as NESCAC All-Conference honors.
