NEW ORLEANS — Bates College senior Noah Gauthier and assistant track and field coach Joe Woodhead received regional honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday, taking home New England Men’s Field Athlete of the Year and Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year honors, respectively.

Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) wins the New England Field Men’s Field Athlete award for the second consecutive year. Gauthier won New England Small College Athletic Conference titles in the shot put and hammer for the second straight season. The NCAA indoor champion in the 35-pound weight throw enters this week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships with the second-longest mark in the hammer (191-3).

Woodhead is Bates’ longtime throws mentor for both the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Bates, coaching a litany of Bobcats to NCAA championships and All-America honors. Woodhead continued his outstanding work in the throwing events this year with the Bates men’s team, as Gauthier won the 35-pound weight throw at the NCAA indoor meet and threw the hammer 191-3 this spring, while sophomore Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the hammer, and freshman Christopher Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) won the NESCAC title in the javelin.
