In his third career start at inside linebacker for Bates, sophomore Ted Durkinsubmitted his finest game to date in a 27-14 loss to Williams College. Durkin (Rye Beach, N.H.) made 11 tackles, all solo, as the Bobcats showed promise but came up on the short end of the score.Led by Durkin’s run-stopping, the Bobcat defense managed a respectable performance against the Williams rushing offense, allowing the Ephs just 2.75 yards per carry, taking away a pair of Brian Morrissey jaunts that totaled 48 yards alone.
Durkin and the Bobcats search for their first win of the season against winless Wesleyan University Saturday at 1 p.m. at Garcelon Field.

Beth Billingtonis the only senior on the 2008 Bates volleyball team, and the middle blocker from St. Paul, Minn., came up big for the Bobcats in a 4-1 week that pulled the team’s record to an even .500 at 9-9.Billington led Bates in attack percentage, at .356, averaging a team second-best 2.32 kills per set. She also led the team in blocking at 0.89 blocks per set (17 overall).
Billington played in her final home match Wednesday night against Bowdoin; she and the Bobcats travel to Eastern Connecticut State University this Friday and Saturday for the Crabtree Invitational round robin tournament.
