Bates’ Shadowen, Rupasinghe face off in Wallach A Singles title match
LEWISTON, Maine — The host Bates College men’s tennis team saw two of its members square off in the championship match of the Singles A Flight on Sunday, highlighting the annual, two-day Wallach Tennis Invitational.
Bates first-year Nick Shadowen (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) took on Bates junior Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) in the final match of the 19-player Singles A Flight bracket Sunday morning, with Shadowen coming from behind to prevail in a hard-fought victory by a score of 3-6, 7-6(2), 10-5.
The Doubles A Flight championship match pitted Andy Peters and Rich Bonfiglio of Middlebury against Skidmore’s Carl-Eric Girardin and T.J. David, with the Middlebury pair claiming the title by an 8-4 score.
Taking a grueling route to the singles final, Shadowen defeated Oscar Pena of Bowdoin, 6-4, 4-6, (10-2), followed by a 7-6(5), 2-6, 10-8 defeat of Colby’s Bryan Brown, and a 6-2, 6-3 ouster of Vassar’s Mike Mattleson in Sunday’s semifinal.
Rupasinghe’s route to the final included a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Amhersts’s Robby Sorrel, a 6-2, 6-2 ouster of Southern Maine’s Josh Warren, and a semifinal 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Bowdoin All-American Stephen Sullivan.
Other competitors in singles for Bates included junior Adam Nielson (Den Haag, Netherlands), who defeated Seth Rogers of Brandeis 6-3, 6-4 in B Singles before falling to Amherst’s Surainder Asokaraj; junior Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.), who went 0-1 in B Singles; sophomore Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.), who went 0-1 in B Singles; sophomore Sam Woods (Cambridge, N.Y.), who went 0-1 in C Singles; first-year Sawyer Lawson (Concord, Mass.), who went 0-1 in C Singles; and sophomore Matthew Chamberlin (Canton, Maine), who went 0-1 in D Singles.
Shadowen and Mannelly teamed up in the A Doubles Flight and registered an 8-2 defeat of Amherst’s Camacho/Waterman duo before falling to Skidmore’s Girardin and David in the semifinals. Nielson and Beaton were on the other side of that bracket, going 0-1. Chamberlin and first-year Colby Maldini (Newington, N.H.) went 0-1 in B Doubles, as did Lawson and Woods on the other side of the bracket.
