Women’s XC places third at state championship

CUMBERLAND, Maine — The Bates College women’s cross country team finished in third place out of eight teams Saturday at the State of Maine Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine at Twin Brook Recreation Area.

Bates scored 57 points, finishing behind Colby (30) and Bowdoin (46) and ahead of Southern Maine, UMaine-Farmington, St. Joseph’s, the University of New England and UMaine-Presque Isle.

Sophomore Chloe Bourne (Litchfield, Conn.) led the Bobcats by finishing ninth out of 115 runners overall, covering the 5-kilometer course in 19:22.05. Three teammates followed her in succession, with junior Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) in 10th place at 19:26.73, sophomore Liz Rowley (Evanston, Ill.) in 11th at 19:29.15 and sophomore Alex Alberto (Concord, Mass.) in 12th at 19:34.53. Junior Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario), senior Allie Goldstein (Needham, Mass.) and junior Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) rounded out Bates’ top seven, in 15th, 16th and 22nd places, respectively.

Bates returns to action on Nov. 1, when the Bobcats host the NESCAC Cross Country Championships at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The women’s race starts at 1 p.m.
