Beckwith named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

Val Beckwith ’09 added a second NESCAC Player of the Week award to her lengthy list of career honors.

HADLEY, Mass. — Bates College senior Val Beckwith was named NESCAC Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week along with Middlebury’s Emily Johnson, the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced on Monday.

Beckwith, the 5-foot-10 forward and team co-captain, averaged 19.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game in leading Bates to first place in the Salem State College Tipoff Tournament. The Bobcats defeated Rhode Island College 58-39 on Friday, then defeated the host Vikings 65-60 for the tournament championship on Saturday to start the season 2-0. Beckwith was named tournament MVP. The two-time NESCAC All-Conference honoree grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds in the win over RIC, then poured in 23 points, including 16 in the second half, in the hard-fought victory over Salem State.

It is the second NESCAC Player of the Week award won by Beckwith in her career. She also earned the honor on Jan. 2, 2007 — coincidentally, that came after an all-tournament team performance in the Salem State College Christmas Tournament, also after scoring 23 points against the Vikings.

Beckwith will lead the Bobcats against the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s teams from the two schools squaring off at 7:30 p.m.
