SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — The Bates College women’s basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped Sunday at the South Padre Island Shootout, as McMurry University upended the Bobcats 66-42.
Amber Horton scored 16 points to go with 4 steals for the Choctaws (6-2), while Anna Berthel added 12. Dominique Brown filled out the stat sheet with 8 points, 7 assists, 7 steals and 6 rebounds.
The Bobcats (7-2) struggled offensively, shooting 37.1 percent from the floor and turning the ball over 45 times, including 25 steals by McMurry. Junior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) scored a team-high 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, while senior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) scored 7 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Bates led for most of the first half after taking a 5-0 lead on a layup by Yanofsky and a 3-pointer by first-year Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.). McMurry stayed within five points of Bates and tied it at 19-19 before a pair of free throws by sophomore Emily Jasinski (Durham, N.H.) gave the Bobcats their last lead of the game at 21-19 with 2:18 left in the first period. Two jumpers by Horton, sandwiched around a free throw by Precious Williams, put the Choctaws ahead 24-21 at the half.
McMurry burst out in the second half after a Yanofsky layup, scoring 12 straight points. A 3-pointer by first-year Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) and a layup by sophomore Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) stemmed the tide temporarily, making it 40-28 with 14:03 remaining, but McMurry went on another run fueled by Bates turnovers, outscoring the Bobcats 17-5 over a span of 7 1/2 minutes and putting the game out of reach at 59-35 with 4:22 left in the game.
The Bobcats will return to action Jan. 3-4 at the Williams College Winter Classic, where they’ll face Norwich University on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m., followed the next day by a game against either Williams or UMaine-Farmington.
