Holland, Brockman pace alpine team in slaloms at Bates Carnival

BETHEL, Maine — Micaela Holland finished 11th on the women’s side and Bump Heldman notched a second straight top 20 finish to lead the Bates alpine ski team in the slaloms on Saturday at the Bates Winter Carnival.
The combined Bates Nordic and alpine ski teams placed seventh out of 11 teams at the season-opening carnival, with their 611 points easily outpacing eighth-place St. Lawrence (542). Dartmouth won the carnival with 902 points.
Bates sophomore Holland (Belmont, Mass.) took 11th place out of 55 competitors on Saturday with a two-run combined time of 1:52.20, leading the Bates women to fifth place out of 11 teams in the slalom. Senior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) came in 18th at 1:55.33 and senior Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) was 23rd at 1:57.29.
Sophomore Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) took 15th place out of 58 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1:44.85, leading the Bates men to sixth place in the slalom. First-year Heldman (Auburn, Maine) was 18th in 1:45.11 and first-year Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was 26th at 1:47.60.

The Bates College alpine ski team got off to a solid start to the carnival season after the completion of the giant slalom events at Sunday River on Friday, the first day of the Bates Winter Carnival.
Bump Heldman led the Bates men to seventh place out of 10 teams in the men’s GS, finishing in 11th place out of 58 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:35.47. Alex Jones placed 21st at 2:37.27 and sophomore Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) was 27th in 2:38.52.
The Bates women were also seventh out of 10 teams, led by senior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine), who tied for 21st place with a two-run combined time of 2:43.00. First-year Kristin Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) and Micaela Holland weren’t far behind in 24th and 25th places, respectively, and Emily Sampson was 29th.
Bates will compete next weekend at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival at Attitash Mountain.
