Ellefson, Taylor lead Nordic in freestyle races at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. — Both the Bates College men’s and women’s Nordic skiing teams placed seventh out of 13 teams in Saturday’s Mass Start Free Technique races at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished sixth out of 13 teams in the final standings in the carnival with 574.5 points, only half a point behind fifth-place Williams and 23.5 points ahead of rival Colby.
Bates senior Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) placed 14th out of 60 competitors in the men’s 15K race, with a time of 38:57.2. Senior Dylan Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.) came next in 24th place at 39:48.3, while senior Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) placed 27th in 39:55.6.
In the women’s 10K freestyle, first-year Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) placed 18th and sophomore Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) was 19th, in 32:04.6 and 32:05.9, respectively, out of 65 competitors. Sophomore Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) was 21st in 32:12.4.
Bates competes next weekend in the Middlebury Carnival.
Natalie Ruppertsberger continued her stellar season by placing seventh out of 72 competitors Friday in the 5K Classic Technique race at the Dartmouth College Winter Carnival.
Ruppertsberger led the Bates women’s Nordic team to third place out of 13 teams in the event, covering the Oak Hill course in 15:57.2. It is her third top-10 finish of the carnival season and her best to date.
Beth Taylor placed 17th for the Bobcats in 16:29.6, and junior Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) came in 23rd in 16:39.9, edging out first-year Caitlin Curran (Waitsfield, Vt.), who was 24th with the same time, for Bates’ third and final scoring mark.
On the men’s side, Sam Evans-Brown finished ninth out of 63 skiers in the men’s 10K Classic race in a time of 27:37.7, the fifth top-10 finish out of seven races thus far for him. Sylvan Ellefson placed 15th in 27:51.7 and Dylan Mogk tied for 25th place in 28:25.2, putting the Bates men fifth out of 13 teams in the event.
