Alpine skiers rebound in the giant slalom at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bates College alpine teams wrapped up the Middlebury College Carnival with the giant slalom races today. After a tough first day in the slalom races, the men’s alpine team bounced back with first-year Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) leading the way. Heldman placed 20th out of 54 competitors with a combined time of 2:05.18. First-year Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was next in 28th place with a time of 2:06.58, followed by sophomore August Felix (Cambridge, Mass.) in 38th place with a time of 2:07.38.

The men’s alpine team finished in ninth place in the giant slalom, with 51 points ahead of Harvard (46) and just behind St. Michael’s (58).

The women’s alpine team was led by senior tri-captain Megan Papineau’s 24th-place finish with a combined time of 2:10.91. First-year Kristin Waddle placed 27th with a combined time of 2:11.38. Senior tri-captain Liz Thompson was the third point-scorer for the women with a 34th-place finish with a combined time of 2:12.34.

The women’s alpine team finished in seventh place in the giant slalom with 60 points ahead of Colby (54) and looking up at St. Lawrence (75).

The combined Bates Nordic and alpine ski teams finished the Middlebury Carnival in seventh place out of 11 teams, with 508 points, just ahead of St. Lawrence (501).

The Bates Nordic and alpine teams compete next weekend at the Colby Carnival, which is also the EISA Eastern Regional Championships.

Friday Recap

In the women’s slalom, Emily Sampson led the women with a 22nd-place finish with a combined time of 1:41.79. Micaela Holland was next in 28th-place with a combined time of 1:43.03. Kristin Waddle rounded out the top three skiers for the women with a 37th-place finish with a combined time of 1:46.57. The Bobcat women sat in seventh place out of 10 teams after the slalom competition.

The men’s alpine team caught some unlucky breaks in the slalom competition. August Felix and John Canney finished 30th (1:39.67) and 47th (2:00.74) respectively. Alex Jones, Bump Heldman and Ross Brockman did not finish one of the two slalom races. Ben Manter was disqualified in the second slalom race. The Bobcat men finished in 10th place after the slalom competition.
