CAMBRRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College men’s track and field received standout performances from several places on Saturday in finishing 13th out of 24 scoring teams at the New England Division III Indoor Championships at MIT.
Bates scored 16 points, two points behind 12th-place Amherst and ahead of competition such as Westfield State (14), Wesleyan (12) and Connecticut College (10).
Among the standout, point scoring performances for the Bobcats were:
- Sophomore Tom Esponnette (Auburn, Maine) placed fifth in the 1-mile run, at 4:22.91;
- Senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) placed fifth in the pole vault at 14-00.00;
- The distance medley relay team of senior C.J. Murray (North Andover, Mass.), sophomore Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.), junior Naoki Kakuta (Osaka, Japan) and first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) placed sixth in a time of 10:49.51;
- Senior Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) placed seventh in the weight throw with a top heave of 49-01.00;
- Junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) placed eighth in the 3,000, at 8:50.55;
- First-year Mike Jiang (Madison, Conn.) placed eighth in the 55-meter dash, at 6.67 seconds;
- The 4×800 relay team of first-year Peter Corcoran (Stillwater, Minn.), sophomore Joseph Musso (Wallingford, Conn.), senior Mike Watson (Mansfield, Mass.) and Esponnette placed eighth in 8:12.58.
The Bobcats will next compete at Open New Englands next weekend at Boston University.

Bates sophomore Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) finished ninth on Friday in the pentathlon as the Division III New England Indoor Championships got under way.
Epler scored 3,285 points in the event, a personal record by 100 points, putting him at No. 3 on Bates’ all-time performance list in the event.
