Squash, men’s swimming championships ahead this weekend

The weekend slate for Bates College athletics includes no home events, but there’s lots going on farther afield.

The Bates men’s swimming team travels to Wesleyan University for the NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, taking place Friday through Sunday. Senior captain Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine) and a host of talented first-years will be looking to put a nice stamp on their season at NESCACs. Read the meet preview release here.

The Bates men’s and women’s squash teams will be represented by two men and two women at this weekend’s College Squash Association Individual Nationals at Williams College. Junior Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.) and sophomore Will Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.) will compete in the men’s bracket, while juniors Hannah Laverty (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Whitney Roller (Haverford, Pa.) will see action on the women’s side.

For alpine and Nordic skiing, the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association wraps up the regular season on Friday and Saturday at Sugarloaf with the Colby Winter Carnival, which will doubles as the Eastern Championships. It will be the final tuneup for the top skiers in the East before Bates hosts the NCAA Skiing Championships March 11-14.

Bates’ top indoor track and field performers of the season will be at the all-divisions Open New England Championships Friday and Saturday at Boston University.

The lone spring team in action this weekend is women’s tennis, which travels to MIT to take on the rival Engineers Saturday at 11 a.m. Bates will host its first home women’s lacrosse game of the season on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Gordon, and the men’s lacrosse team will debut the 2009 season on Wednesday at Keene State.
