Softball shuts out Morrisville to split final two in Florida
CLAREMONT, Fla. — The Bates College softbal team split its last two games at the National Training Center Tournament on Sunday. Bates was defeated by the Indiana Tech Warriors 18-1, but shut down Morrisville State in the second game, winning 8-0.
In the first game of the afternoon, the Bobcats looked solid in the first few innings. Indiana Tech scored one run in the first inning, but the Bobcats stayed tight, scoring one of their own to tie the game. Red-hot rookie outfielder Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) led off the first inning with a single and then stole second base to put herself into scoring position. Senior co-captain Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) stepped to the plate and drove Ullmann in on an RBI single. However, that would be the only run of the game for the Bobcats. Starting rookie pitcher Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) pitched 3 1/3 innings before Indiana Tech was able to pull away.
Indiana Tech increased their lead to 3-1 through the third inning by scoring two runs in the second inning. In the fourth inning, the Warriors’ bats came alive and the Bobcats pitchers’ control went awry. Indiana Tech scored 15 runs in the inning on 8 hits, 6 walks and two hit batsmen.
The Bobcats utilized all three of their pitchers with senior Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) relieving Finn in the fourth inning and facing six batters, but not recording an out. Sophomore Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) replaced Knobel and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Bobcats put the first game behind them as they took on Morrisville State immediately following their Indiana Tech game. Bates’ offense did not waste any time, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Bobcats tacked on four more runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to end the game. Bates shared the offensive wealth in the game with multiple players recording extra base hits, RBIs and runs scored.
Ullmann led the Bobcats, going 3-4 with two doubles, a stolen base, four RBIs and three runs scored. Junior Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) went 2-3 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Saniuk went 2-4 with an RBI and a triple, while fellow senior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) went 1-3 with an RBI. First-year catcher Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass) was 2-2 with a run scored as fellow first-years Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) and Lauren Dobish (Mercersburg, Pa.) were 1-1 and 1-2, respectively. McManus also stole a base and scored a run, while Dobish’s lone hit in the game was a double. Rookie Kathryn Buckley (Middlebury, Conn.) also scored a run and recorded an RBI.
Bates next plays a doubleheader at Rhode Island College on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Bobcats home opener is scheduled for Sunday, March 29 with a doubleheader against Brandeis.
