WATERVILLE, Maine — Matt Moore pitched seven-plus strong innings and Wil Hartigan earned the save as Colby earned a 4-3 win over Bates Saturday at Coombs Field.
Colby moves to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in NESCAC East Division play heading into Sunday’s noon doubleheader at Bates. The Bobcats fall to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in the division.
Moore struck out two and walked one while scattering eight hits, while Hartigan struck out one and walked none and gave up just a lone hit.
Bates took a 3-0 lead with all of its runs in the second inning. Sophomore Noah Lynd (Meriden, N.H.) start off the inning by being hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by sophomore Gordy Webb (Hampden, Maine), went to third on a passed ball, and then scored on a single by sophomore Noah Burke (Appleton, Maine). Webb and Burke both came around to score without the benefit of a base hit, thanks to a Colby error and a double play.
Colby got one run back in the top of the third inning on back-to-back doubles by John LaMantia and Craig Cooper.
LaMantia got things going in a three-run fifth inning to give Colby the runs they would need. He had a two-out walk, moved to second on a single by Cooper, and then the bases were loaded after Ryan Conlon was hit by a pitch. Kyle McKay picked up a walk to drive in the first run. After a pitching change, Dominick Morrill walked to force in another run. Richard Newton had an RBI groundout to drive in Conlon with the eventual game-winning run.
Cooper finished with two hits and one run, while LaMantia scored twice and had the double. McKay finished with a double and one walk for the Mules.
Webb had three hits and one run for Bates, while first-year Mike Ciummei (Acton, Mass.) also had three hits. Sophomore Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) had a pair of hits for Bates. First-year Will Furbush (South Portland, Maine) pitched two innings of shutout relief.
