Finn no-hits UMF as softball splits doubleheader
LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College first-year pitcher Kristen Finn threw a no-hitter in the first game of a softball doubleheader against UMaine-Farmington on Sunday, as the host Bobcats won 10-0 in five innings in Game 1 and fell 8-5 to the visiting Beavers in Game 2.
Bates moved to 5-10 on the season with the split, while the Beavers started out their season with a 1-1 record.
Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) shut out the Beavers on no hits and two walks while striking out four to earn her second win in as many days, raising her record to 2-5. The Bobcats, meanwhile, rapped out 10 run on 13 hits in four innings against UMF starter Liz Bergeron, shortening the game to five innings.
Bates senior Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) hit a two-run home run in the first inning, her second homer in as many days and her third this season. Saniuk owns the Bates career homers record, now with 20, and has now reached base on six consecutive trips to the plate. Other offensive leaders for Bates included Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.), who hit two doubles and scored twice, and Katherine Buckley (Middlebury, Conn.), who went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. First-year Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.), first-year Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) and Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) also collected two hits apiece.
In Game 2, UMF scored once in the first inning and added four more, all unearned, in the fourth off of Bates sophomore starter Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.), who allowed 10 hits in four innings of work. Bates senior relief pitcher Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) was charged with one run on four hits in three innings.
The Beavers totalled 14 hits in the game, all singles. Jessica Timmreck, Erin Porter, Mckell Barnes, Emily Coye, Casandra Dyer and Whitney Page had two hits apiece, with Coye and Page driving in two runs apiece.
Timmreck (1-0) earned the win for the Beavers, going the distance and allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits and four walks.
Saniuk went 2-for-2 at the plate for Bates, while senior Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Bates will next play a single game at Colby on Wednesday, April 8 at 4:30 p.m.
