Duncan, Alexander compete well at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA — Bates College junior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan made a star showing Wednesday at the Penn Relays, finishing fourth out of 26 athletes in the women’s college hammer throw competition.
Competing against primarily Division I athletes, Duncan (Topsham, Maine) had a top throw of 164 feet and 2 inches, trailing only Katarina Busljeta of Tulane (170-4), Emma Ruggiero of Princeton (169-9) and Emily Settle of Lehigh (169-5), and finishing immediately ahead of Kim Mallard of Army (162-10).
Also competing for Bates, senior Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) placed 46th out of 59 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles college championship, with a respectable time of 1:04.43, ahead of runners from such programs as Tennessee, Dartmouth and Pittsburgh.
Duncan and Alexander will lead the Bates women’s track and field team on Saturday at the NESCAC Championships, to be held at Connecticut College.
