HADLEY, Mass. — Bates College sophomore outfielder Chris Burke (Andover, Mass.) was named to the 2009 NESCAC Baseball All-Conference Second Team, the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday.
Burke becomes the first Bobcat to earn all-conference honors since 2005, when Mike Kinsman ’05 and Charlie Engasser ’05 were named.
Burke started in 33 games this season in right field after seeing little playing time as a first-year player, recording only six at-bats. He made an immediate impact, starting off the season with an 18-game hitting streak. In all, he went hitless in only four games and had 12 multi-hit games, finishing with a .406 batting average, tops on the team and eighth in the NESCAC, with two home runs and 33 RBIs.
Burke even set the Bates single-season hits record, with 52, breaking the former record of 50 set only a year ago by Brian Mahoney ’08, and his 33 RBIs were the most by a Bobcat in over a decade. Burke also stole 10 bases, swiping successfully on 8 of his final 9 attempts.
