Discus throwers lead men’s track to 14th at ECACs

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Bates College sophomore Candido Bousquet was second and junior Rich McNeil was fifth in the discus throw on Friday at the ECAC Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, leading the Bobcats into a tie for 14th place among 56 scoring teams.

Bousquet (Colombo, Sri Lanka) threw the discus 152 feet and 2 inches, second only to Jun Ho Ham of Union College. McNeil wasn’t far behind, at 149-06. McNeil also placed ninth in the shot put (46-11.50), just out of making the finals, while Bousquet placed 14th in the long jump (21-00.50).

Also on Friday, sophomore Ryan Quinn (Watertown, Mass.) placed 11th in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 22.27 seconds; senior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) tied for 21st in the high jump (6-00.75), and the 4×100 relay team placed 13th with a time of 43.62 seconds.

Thursday Recap

Rich McNeil placed third in the men’s hammer throw on Thursday at the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, recording a season-best heave of 181 feet and 2 inches.

McNeil’s performance, which improved his standing for qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships, led the Bobcats to a tie for 11th place with Brockport State in the early going, with seven points.

Sophomore Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with a season-best time of 9:36.44, good for All-ECAC honors and the day’s other point for the Bobcats. Dilts was seeded 16th in the event.

Another Bates highlight was Ryan Quinn’s effort in the 100-meter dash, where he placed ninth, just missing the finals by one spot, with a time of 11.23 seconds, putting the lie to his event seeding of tied for a last among 33 competitors.

Also competing for Bates, first-year Sam Goldstein (Memphis, Tenn.) tied for 11th in the pole vault at 14-04.00, while Jerome Bennett tied for 16th at 13-10.00.

Sophomore Christopher Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) came in 16th in the javelin throw, with a top throw of 158-08.
