SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Bates College junior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) posted her second runner-up finish in as many days Friday at the ECAC Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, coming in second in the shot put and leading Bates College to 12th place out of 56 scoring teams at the meet with 22.50 points. The Bobcats were ahead of all but one NESCAC rival at the meet, sixth-place Williams.

Duncan had a top shot put of 43-09.25,  a season best which improves her candidacy for competing in the shot at the NCAA Championships. Duncan was second behind only Alyssa Pirinelli of St. Lawrence.

Other Friday highlights included senior Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) finishing fourth in a highly competitive 400-meter hurdles race, with a time of 1:02.30.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) broke the Bates record in the 400-meter dash by tying RPI’s Cassie Fortini for seventh place in a time of 58.58 seconds, 0.44 seconds better than the former Bobcat record of 59.02 set by Sarah Dominick in 1994.

Next up for the Bobcats is the season-ending NCAA Outdoor Championships, to be held at Marietta College in Ohio from May 21-23. Alexander (400 hurdles) and Duncan (hammer throw) have automatically qualified to make return trips to NCAAs. Senior Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) is a provisional qualifier in the triple jump.
