LEWISTON, Maine — Three members of the Bates College women’s lacrosse team were named All-Region Thursday by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Sophomore midfielder Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and sophomore attacker Joan O’Neill (Westwood, Mass.) were both named to the Pilgrim Region First Team, while first-year defender Linnea Fulton (Bristol, R.I.) received Second Team honors.
It is the second postseason honor this year for both Dannis and O’Neill, who were NESCAC All-Conference selections last week. As First Team members, Dannis and O’Neill are eligible to be named All-Americans on May 25.
Dannis, who was a Second Team All-Region selection as a rookie last year, is the rare midfielder able to make a big difference at both ends of the field. She led the team in ground balls (35), draw controls (51) and caused turnovers (23), while ranking second on the team in scoring with 25 goals and four assists. She tied for first in the NESCAC in draw controls per game (3.40), and ranked ninth in the conference in ground balls per game (2.27) and seventh in caused turnovers per game (1.60). Dannis also scored 11 free-position goals on the year, ranking fifth in the league in FPS goals per game (0.73).
O’Neill enjoyed a breakout season as Bates’ most dangerous scorer. After posting 16 points in 2009, eighth-best on the squad, O’Neill led the Bobcats in scoring by a wide margin in 2010, netting 38 goals with 21 assists (59 points). She scored multiple points in every game of the season, including two or more goals in 13 straight games. Against Tufts on March 31, O’Neill scored five goals to go with two assists, completing a three-game run in which she scored 13 goals. The quick and aggressive attacker finished the year ranked second in the conference in points per game (3.93), third in goals per game (2.53) and seventh in assists per game (1.40).
Fulton emerged as the Bobcats’ best low defender and an excellent one-on-one defender with good instincts. She finished the season ranked second on the team in ground balls with 23, and was third on the team in both draw controls (14) and caused turnovers (16).
