LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College Department of Athletics gave out its end-of-the-year awards Wednesday evening at the Senior Athletes BBQ, held inside the Chase Hall Dining Commons.

Seniors Val Beckwith and Sylvan Ellefson were named the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, among a number of outstanding candidates.

Beckwith had a standout year on the basketball court, leading the Bobcats to a 16-9 record en route to a slew of postseason honors, including NESCAC Player of the Year and New England Division III Player of the Year, as well as two All-America citations. Beckwith finished her career as Bates’ second-leading scorer of all time, with 1,470 points, and averaged a team-high 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) earned his second consecutive Bates Male Athlete of the Year award, following another outstanding season on the Nordic ski team. Ellefson won his third career EISA carnival race, the freestyle race at the UNH Carnival, and earned All-East honors during the carnival season. He wrapped up the year by finishing 12th in the 10K freestyle race and 21st in the 20K Classical race at the NCAA Collegiate Skiing Championships, his fourth trip to NCAAs in as many years.

Receiving the Senior Sportsmanship Award were a pair of two-sports athletes at Bates. Sarah Blomstedt (Gill, Mass.) was the No. 4 player on the Bates women’s squash team and a starting back on the field hockey team, and Nate Kellogg (Natick, Mass.) was a starting back on the men’s soccer team and a starting midfielder on the men’s lacrosse team, and a captain for both squads.
