LEWISTON, Maine — Bates rookie standout softball player Leah Maciejewski is taking her game on the road — or more accurately, across the ocean — this summer.
According to a story in the Lowell Sun, Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) was selected by USA Athletes International to play on a team of Division II and III softball players to take part in a European tour, which will include games in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. Maciejewski and teammates leave on July 19.
Maciejewski led an impressive class of rookies on the Bates softball team in 2009. She started at catcher all season for the Bobcats and hit .370, second on the team, with 13 RBIs and a .469 slugging percentage.
Maciejewski claimed Bobcat of the Week honors on April 27, following her heroics in Bates’ crucial series against Trinity. She capped a terrific game in dramatic fashion when she doubling down the left-field line to score Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) with the game-winning run in the 11th inning for a 9-8 Bates victory. The win clinched second place in the NESCAC East Division and the Bobcats’ first berth in the four-team field of the NESCAC Softball Championship, in the tournament’s ninth year of existence. On the day she went 3 for 6 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. She also singled and scored in the seventh inning, when Bates came back from an 8-5 deficit to tie the game at 8-8 and send the game into extra innings.
Maciejewski isn’t the only team member to play softball abroad this summer. After a tryout last winter, Leah Citrin ’09 (Rye Brook, N.Y.) was selected as a Team USA member in the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
