Women’s soccer posts 3-1 win over Connecticut College

LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women’s soccer team opened up the 2009 season with a 3-1 NESCAC victory over Connecticut College Saturday at Russell Street Field.
Bates sophomore forward Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) was the first Bobcat to score. She took a pass from junior midfielder Meredith Poore (Duxbury, Mass.) and deposited the goal from close range in the 12th minute of the contest, for the eventual game-winner.
In the 15th minute of the game, Poore controlled a corner kick and found Bobcat sophomore midfielder Courtney Talcott (Millbury, Mass.) at the top of the penalty area. Talcott booted in the second Bobcat goal of the day. Bates then held strong defensively as they took the 2-0 lead into halftime.
Connecticut College (1-1, 0-1 NESCAC) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 66th minute, as Camel sophomore forward Kate Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) gained control of a bouncing corner kick and knocked the ball into the net.
The Bobcats (1-0, 1-0) found some breathing room in the 82nd minute when sophomore midfielder Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) made a perfect pass to fellow sophomore Sam Alper (Holliston, Mass.), who then juked the ball past the goalie into the left corner of the goal. It was the final scoring of the game for either team.
Connecticut College first-year goalie Amy Lowitt (Baltimore, Md.) recored eight saves, while Bates sophomore goalie Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) turned back 11 shots. Bates established a 25-20 advantage in shots taken.
The Bobcats will next play a NESCAC matchup at Bowdoin on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The Camels will host Mount Holyoke College in a non-conference game on Thursday.
