Canney leads golf team at UMF Invitational

BETHEL, Maine — With a team-leading round from junior John Canney, the Bates College golf team finished sixth out of eight teams Thursday at the UMF Invitational. Held at par 72 Sunday River Golf Club, Husson took first place with a five-player combined score of 322.
Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) shot a 41 on the front nine, leading to a score of 85 on the day. First-years Corey Gingras (Eastford, Conn.) and Jared Quenzel (West Hartford, Conn.) both carded an 88. Senior newcomer Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) shot a 90 and junior newcomer Andrew Steiker-Epstein (Philadelphia, Pa.) shot a 92 for the Bobcats.
Bates golf is next in action with the Bobcat women playing a dual match at Bowdoin, to be played at Prospect Hill G.C. on Saturday. The Bates men will then play at the Maine Intercollegiate Championships Sept. 25-26 at Natanis G.C.
