Men’s soccer defeated at Bowdoin
Greg Watts ’12
BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College’s Eddie Jones scored a pair of goals to lead the Polar Bear men’s soccer team to a 4-0 conference win over Bates College on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 (1-1 NESCAC) this year while the Bobcats dip to 0-2 (0-2 NESCAC). Bates will look for its first win tomorrow in a home game (1 p.m.) against Husson, the Bobcats’ first game against the Eagles since 1998.
Jones got the Polar Bears on the board 12 minutes into the game, when a deflection off of Bates sophomore goaltender Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) came to the foot of Jones, who buried the game’s first tally. Bowdoin added a second score six minutes later when a collision in the box resulted in a Bates foul and a penalty kick opportunity for the hosts. Call Nichols netted the ball to the lower-right corner to give Bowdoin a 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Polar Bears held the Bobcats scoreless for the remainder, and added a pair of late goals. Hugh Fleming set up Jones for a score in the 84th minute and Carl Woock headed his first goal of the season.
Watts ended with five saves for Bates while Dan Hicks earned the shutout with three saves for Bowdoin.
