Women’s tennis opens season at ITA tourney at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Bates College women’s tennis team opened the fall season at the ITA Women’s Division III New England Championship, held at MIT.

Among Bobcat highlights, Bates first-year Katie Helfgott (Newton, Mass.) won her first-round match in the singles championship bracket, topping Emily Johnson of UMass-Boston 6-4, 6-0 before falling to No. 4 seed Brittany Berckes of Amherst 6-0, 6-2.

On the other side of the singles bracket, Bates senior Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) lost in the first round. She moved on to the consolation bracket, where she defeated Alanna Dick of Smith College 6-1, 6-0 before falling to Wesleyan’s Sarah Miller in a tiebreaker 3-6, 6-2 (10-4).

Competing in the doubles championship, Bates sophomore Meg Anderson (Cohasset, Mass.) and first-year Jacqui Holmes (Harvard, Mass.) scored an 8-1 first-round win over Wesleyan’s Genevieve Aniello and Meredith Holmes, then were defeated 8-2 in the second round by third seed Grace Baljon and Taylor French of Williams.

Bates next competes in the NEWITT Championships, Oct. 16-18 at Mt. Holyoke, Smith and Amherst.
