Volleyball plays tough at Wesleyan

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — The Bates College volleyball team clawed to a 3-2 defeat in an evenly played match at NESCAC rival Wesleyan University on Saturday, by set scores of 13-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Bates (8-4, 0-4 NESCAC) was off to a strong start, seizing a 15-1 lead in the first set, then taking a 2-1 lead after winning the third set. Wesleyan bounced back with narrow set victories in the fourth and fifth sets.
Sophomore Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) had 48 assists for the Bobcats, while senior Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) had a team-high 13 kills and first-year Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) collected a match-high 29 digs. Sophomore Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) led the team in blocks (three) and service aces (six).
The Cardinals (6-8, 2-2 NESCAC) received 40 assists from Ellie Healy, 13 kills from Alissa Santucci, 21 digs by Ruby Hernandez and four blocks by Laura Volgenau.
Bates next has a non-conference match at St. Joseph’s College of Maine, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
