Kyle McAllister selected to play in Mexico All-Star game
GRANBURY, Texas — Bates College senior Kyle McAllister has been selected to play for a Division III All-Star team in the 2009 Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the Tec de Monterrey Campus Estado de Mexico.
McAllister (Exeter, N.H.) is one of 51 players representing 35 NCAA Division III football teams selected to play for Team Stars & Stripes against the Tec Monterrey All-Stars.
McAllister is the only player from a NESCAC school to be selected for the team.
The visiting team will practice at the Tec Monterrey (CEM) facility in Atizapan de Zaragoza near Mexico City from December 14 to 18 and will also visit the Aztec pyramids and the nation’s capital before facing their Mexican opponents. Tec Monterrey, a private university system in Mexico, has captured eight of the past ten Liga Major football national championships.
It is the second postseason honor for McAllister, who was named NESCAC All-Conference First Team Defense in November. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound safety established himself as one of the top defensive playmakers in the conference since assuming the Bobcats’ starting safety role as a sophomore. He finished the season with 36 tackles (24 solo), two interceptions, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery, while opposing coaches and quarterbacks tried to keep the ball out of his extensive range. The co-captain’s play and reputation helped Bates rank a healthy fourth in the conference in pass defense.
McAllister also averaged 18.1 yards on 17 kickoff returns and 9.8 yards on four punt returns, and was named the NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week after his 45-yard kickoff return helped set up a fourth-quarter touchdown for Bates in their 28-24 win over Bowdoin on Nov. 7. After three seasons as a regular in the Bates lineup, McAllister finished his career with 141 tackles (92 solo), 11 interceptions, 22 passes defended, three forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. McAllister is Bates’ first two-time member of the All-NESCAC football team since Terence Ryan ’07 in 2006.
