Women’s basketball’s Burns, Beaulieu earn MWBCA weekly honors
LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College women’s basketball team went 4-0 last week, and the team was recognized by having two players honored by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA). Sophomore guard Annie Burns was named Maine Co-Player of the Week with Bowdoin’s Leah Rubega, while first-year guard/forward Allie Beaulieu was named the season’s first Maine Rookie of the Week.
Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) had 10 assists and no turnovers while scoring nine points, grabbing six rebounds and making four steals as Bates beat Norwich 70-64 in the championship game of the Ed Hockenbury Classic on Saturday to cap the week. Burns was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. For the week she averaged 6.5 points, 7.3 assists and 4.3 steals per game.
Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) scored in double figures in each game of the week while averaging 19.0 minutes per game. She scored a game-high 21 points in 22 minutes against Castleton State on Friday. She averaged 13.5 points per game for the week, shooting .455 (10-22) behind the three-point arc and 8-of-10 at the free-throw line. Beaulieu currently leads all rookies in the NESCAC with a 9.7 points per game scoring average.
