Men’s alpine squad impressive in slaloms at St. Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Three Bates men finished among the top 20 Saturday in the slaloms, leading the Bobcat alpine ski team at the St. Lawrence Carnival at Whiteface Mountain.
Bates’ combined Nordic and alpine ski teams finished sixth out of 15 teams at the carnival, with 547 points, between fifth-place Williams (577) and seventh-place Colby (498.5).
Sophomore Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) led the Bates men for the second day in a row, placing 15th overall out of 60 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1:39.18. Junior Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) came in 18th in 1:39.96, a mere hundredth of a second ahead of junior teammate Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine), who was 19th in 1:39.97.
Bates junior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.), a two-time NCAA Championship competitor, finished off a solid first weekend of the season by finishing 14th out of 56 racers in the women’s giant slaloms. First-year Caitlin Forbes (Hanover, Maine) placed 25th in 1:59.78.
The Bates alpine skiing team posted a strong first day of the carnival season on Friday at the St. Lawrence Carnival, where the Bobcats competed in the giant slaloms.
First-year Zoe Livingston (Sharon, Vt.) had the best day for the alpine team in the giant slalom, placing 13th out of 55 competitors overall with a two-run combined time of 2:08.57. Micaela Holland placed 20th at 2:09.74, and sophomore Kristin Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) came in 21st in 2:09.75.
On the men’s side, Bump Heldman had a solid start to the season by finishing 19th out of 60 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:03.75. Ben Manter was 21st in 2:04.31 and sophomore Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) was 23rd in 2:05.44.
Both the men’s and women’s squads placed fifth overall in the GS.
Next up for Bates alpine is the St. Michael’s Carnival next weekend at Smugglers Notch.
