Women’s basketball beats St. Joe’s, 76-50

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) scored 13 points with nine rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Bates women’s basketball team to a 76-50 non-conference win over St. Joseph’s College of Maine on Wednesday night, in the Bobcats’ first home game at Alumni Gym in nine contests.
First-year Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) and junior Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) added 12 points apiece, a season high for McCall. Beaulieu did all of her scoring in the second half. Jjunior Jessie Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) had a season-high 10 points for the Bobcats, who raised their record back above the .500 mark at 9-8. Sophomore Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) dished out 10 assists, her third double-digit-assists game of the season, to go with eight points.
The Monks drop to 7-9. Allie Parent led St. Joe’s with 13 points, while Carolyn Freeman added 12 and Meghan Daigle chipped in with 10 and a team-high eight rebounds. Parent added six rebounds and three steals.
Leading 34-30 at the half, Bates opened up the second period with a 17-8 run to seize control of the game at 51-38 with 14:12 left in the game. Beaulieu scored eight points and McCall added six. Yanofsky drained a wide-open three to make it 48-36 at 15:19, and Beaulieu finished off the streak with her second three.
The Monks closed the gap to 10 one more time, when Daigle made a jumper to cut it to 56-46, but Bates outscored St. Joe’s 20-4 over the final 8:36 of the game to break the game open.
Both teams led by no more than five points in an evenly played first half, and the Bobcats outscored the Monks 14-10 down the stretch over the final 8:18, on the strength of 3-pointers by Yanofsky, Burns and senior Kellie Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.), to post a 34-30 lead at intermission. The Bobcats shot 4-for-7 behind the arc during the period, compared to 1-for-7 for St. Joe’s. Freeman led the Monks with eight points in the period, while Yanofsky led the Bobcats with seven.
Bates next hosts Bowdoin Friday at 6 p.m. in a NESCAC matchup.
