Swimmers score big wins in tri-meet at Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Bates College men’s swimming and diving team got a head-to-head win and the women’s team had numerous exciting event wins on Saturday in a three-team meet with Tufts University and Wheaton (Mass.) College.
The Bates men scored a 185-99 team win over Wheaton, and lost to Tufts 235-63. Earlier in the day, the Bates women fell in a pair of close team scores, 167-131 to Tufts and 151-147 to Wheaton.
For the Bates men, first-year Matt Johns (Seaford, N.Y.) had a breakout performance in the 50-yard backstroke, winning in a time of 24.08 seconds. It was the lone event win for the Bates men on the day as Tufts dominated most events.
For the Bates women, three Bobcat swimmers won a pair of individual events:
- Senior Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) won the 100 backstroke (1:01.31) and the 200 back as well (2:12.79).
- Junior Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) won the 50 freestyle in 25.16 seconds and the 100 free in 55.46 seconds.
- Sophomore Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) won the 500 free in 5:23.30, edging Megan Kono of Tufts by a mere fifth of a second, after Kono edged her in the 1,000 free, 10:59.57 to 10:59.70. Leasure also went on to claim first place in the 400 individual medley, with a time of 4:54.68.
The Bates women also claimed first place in both relays. Drake, first-year Catherine Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.), first-year Katy Zingale (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Tato (Chatham, N.J.) opened with a win in the 200 medley relay with a timeof 1:55.12. The quartet of Drake, senior Sarah Reingold (Oakland, Calif.), Sparks and Green then closed out the meet with a winning 1:43.48 time in the 200 free relay, 0.11 seconds ahead of Wheaton.
Bates has its last meet before the NESCAC Championships next weekend, traveling to Wellesley College for a meet with the host Blue women and the Connecticut College men and women.
