Alpine skiers kick off University of Vermont Winter Carnival
Micaela Holland ’11
STOWE, Vt. – In the first day of the University of Vermont Carnival, junior alpine skier Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) continued his solid racing this season, leading the Bobcat men with a 22nd place finish (2:04.17) out of 50 skiers in the giant slalom. In a little more than a second behind Manter, sophomore Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) secured a 28th place finish with a combined run time of 2:05.44. Rounding out the top three for the Bobcats was senior John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.), scoring his first points of the season with a 35th place finish (2:07.29).
On the women’s side, Bates junior Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) was the top Bates finisher once again. Holland recorded a 26th place finish out of 43 competitors in the giant slalom, with a combined run time of 2:10.66. First-year Caitlin Forbes (Hanover, Maine) was right behind her teammate in 30th with a combined time of 2:13.67. Unfortunately, the remaining two racers for the women did not finish leaving Bates with only two point scorers in the event.
Both the men and women alpine teams will compete again tomorrow in the slalom races, as their Nordic teammates kick off the carnival with the women’s 5K classic and the men’s 10K classic.
