Bates junior Jacob Simon(Waterford, Conn.) made his presence known as a rookie on the Bates baseball team in 2008, sharing the team lead with three home runs.Simon matched that output in one day on Thursday in Bates’ doubleheader at Division II Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Md. In the Bobcats’ first game against the Shock, the catcher and designated hitter clouted a pair of three-run home runs as part of a 3-for-3 day, leading Bates to a 13-7 win. Simon added a two-run shot in the second game that day, an 8-6 loss.
In Bates’ 3-2 week, which included wins over Catholic University and the University of Mary Washington, Simon hit .471 (8-for-17) with three homers, nine RBIs and seven runs scored, while slugging 1.059. Simon also drew three walks for an on-base percentage of .550 on the week.
|Caroline Gattuso ’13
In her first pitching appearance in a Bates uniform, Bates first-year righthander Caroline Gattusogot the victory in lifting the Bobcats to a 6-1 win over Indiana Tech last Thursday. Gattuso allowed only one run over seven innings, scattering four hits and five walks while striking out five batters as Bates evened its record to 1-1 on the first day of its 2010 season in Clermont, Fla.Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) threw two more complete games during Bates’ six-game trip to Florida — on Friday she went all eight innings in an extra-inning, 7-5 loss to UMass-Boston, and on Saturday she went six innings against Eastern Connecticut State, allowing five runs, only two of them earned, while striking out five. Gattuso currently sports a 3.00 earned run average as the Bobcats head on the road this weekend for doubleheaders at Rhode Island College on Saturday and at Wesleyan University on Sunday.
