Bates first baseman, pitcher and designated hitter Noah Lynd(Meriden, N.H.) slugged a two-run home run in the second inning of Bates’ 3-0 victory on Saturday, in the opening game of the team’s doubleheader. In a 2-2 week for the Bobcats, Lynd hit .400 (6-15) with a home run, four RBIs and a .733 slugging percentage.The homer against Tufts was the sixth of the season for Lynd, who recorded a total of six RBIs in all of the 2009 season. With more than half of the 2010 season left to play, Lynd’s six homers were already the most by a Bates player since Rob Maguire hit seven in 2004. (In Tuesday’s 3-2 win at Thomas, Lynd matched Maguire by clubbing his seventh round-tripper.)
Lynd entered this week in a tie for the conference lead in homers and second in the NESCAC in slugging percentage, at .938. Lynd was also hitting .417 and had racked up 19 RBIs, ranking second on the Bobcats in both categories.
|Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan ’10
Bates senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan(Topsham, Maine) led the women’s track and field team to first place out of 17 teams on Saturday at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet, held at Fitchburg State College.Duncan took first place in the hammer throw as well as the discus throw, and she placed second in the shot put, for a total of 28 team points for the Bobcats. Bates scored 144.50 points, well ahead of runner-up UMass-Lowell (119.50). Colby (118), Wheaton (Mass.) (87) and Worcester State (78) rounded out the top five.
Duncan threw the hammer to a 170-11 distance, while teammates Sara Ellen Godek(Gilford, N.H.) and senior Laura Smith(Boulder, Colo.) swept the remaining top three spots in the event. Duncan threw the discus 120-06 and the shot put 44-00.50. She met provisional qualification standards in both the hammer throw and the shot put for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, to be held at Baldwin-Wallace College May 27-29. She currently in the top 10 on the national performance list in both events.
