Bates Scholar-Athletes, Academic Honor Roll honorees unveiled
LEWISTON, Maine — In recognition of National Student-Athlete Day, the Bates College Department of Athletics endeavored to create a new way of recognizing the academic accomplishments of some of Bates’ 600-plus varsity athletes. Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh this week is distributing certificates to the top 25 percent of this year’s student-athletes, in terms of their cumulative grade point average.
Those honored as “Scholar-Athletes” represent the top 10% of Bates varsity athletes in terms of their cumulative GPA through the Fall 2009 semester. This year, that translates to 60 student-athletes carrying a 3.68 GPA or better.
Those honored for maintaining a GPA in the top 25% of all varsity athletes are named to the “Academic Honor Roll,” which this year translates to 87 student-athletes whose GPA is between 3.46 and 3.67.
“The Athletic Department is excited and extremely proud to recognize the academic achievements of our student-athletes with the inauguration of the Scholar-Athlete and Academic Honor Roll awards,” said McHugh. “Consistent with the excellence that personifies the Bates experience, these young women and men have succeeded quite well in the classroom while also competing at a very high level in their sport program. That is truly what is meant by the term ‘student-athlete,’ and we salute Bates’ best and brightest!”
