Women’s varsity eight tops Trinity to win six-boat race
WORCESTER, Mass. — The third-ranked Bates College women’s varsity eight defeated five boats, including No. 4 Trinity College, on Sunday in a 2,000-meter race hosted by WPI.
Bates covered the course in 7:12.6, 5.2 seconds ahead of Trinity (7:17.8). Rounding out the field were Holy Cross (7:20.4), Rochester (7:28.4), Wellesley (7:34.6) and WPI (7:38.5).
The Bates men’s varsity eight, meanwhile, placed third out of four boats, covering the course in 6:30.8, a shade behind runner-up University of Rhode Island (6:29.5) and ahead of Rochester (6.40.0). WPI won in 6:21.3.
The Bates men’s second varsity eight took first place out of three boats at 6:34.0, ahead of WPI (6:44.7) and URI (6:58.4). The Bates men also fielded a varsity four that took first place out of four boats in 7:16.6, ahead of WPI (7:24.0), URI and Rochester.
The Bates women’s second varsity eight took second place out of five boats, timing in at 7:33.0, behind only Trinity (7:25.9) and ahead of Wellesley, Holy Cross and Rochester.
The Bates women also fielded a novice boat that placed fifth out of six boats.
Bates travels back to Worcester on Saturday to race Trinity, New Hampshire, Washington College and Vassar.
