Murtagh named NESCAC Men’s Field Performer of the Week

HADLEY, Mass. — Bates College junior Chris Murtagh received NESCAC Men’s Field Performer of the Week on Monday, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference released its weekly track and field awards.
Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) is the third Bobcat to claim the Men’s Field Performer of the Week award in the first four weeks of the season. First-year Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) received the award last week, as did senior Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) on March 29.
Murtagh scored 28 of Bates’ 226 points in the Maine Men’s Outdoor State Championship meet, helping the Bobcats take first place for the eighth time in the past nine years. Murtagh was second in the discus (44.94 meters), the javelin (52.76) and hammer (54.45), as well as fourth in the shot put (13.62). Murtagh improved is provisional qualification for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in the hammer throw with a season-best performance.
Murtagh is the 2008 Rookie of the Year and the two-time javelin throw champion at the NESCAC Championships, which take place this Saturday at Tufts.
