Barrett, Highland both score twice in setback at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. — The Bates College men’s lacrosse team battled with Trinity College over a 19-minute scoreless stretch, with the host Bantams hanging on to a 5-4 lead, before Trinity outscored Bates 4-1 over the final 13:30 in the fourth quarter for a 9-5 NESCAC win.
Junior Greg Brennan (East Setauket, N.Y.) and senior co-captain Harper Cullen (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) scored two goals apiece to lead the Bantams. Trinity improves to 8-6 overall and 2-6 in the league.
Bates senior David Barrett (Chatham, N.J.) and first-year Rob Highland (Yarmouth, Maine) both scored twice for the Bobcats, who fall to 4-8 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
With the score knotted at four goals apiece, Brennan snuck a shot past Bates sophomore goalkeeper Adam Scharff (Glyndon, Md.) to give the Bantams a 5-4 lead with 2:26 remaining in the first half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Brennan gave the Bantams a 6-4 lead with 13:30 left in the game.
Barrett cut the deficit back to one, at 6-5, with goal assisted by first-year Kyle Starr (Concord, N.H.) with 8:49 left. Trinity strung together three goals in the final 7:28 to secure the win.
Bates trailed 3-1 after one quarter, with the Bobcats’ lone score by sophomore Tim Delaney (Weston, Conn.), assisted by senior Evan Bagley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). Highland opened up the second quarter with an unassisted tally to close the gap to 3-2. Barrett’s first goal evened the game at 3-3 with 11:05 left in the second, and Barrett’s second goal of the quarter tied the game again at 4-4 with 3:54 to go in the half.
Freshman goalkeeper Dominic Piselli (Rockville Center, N.Y.) made seven saves for Trinity. Scharff finished the afternoon with eight saves for the Bobcats.
Bates hosts Colby in its season finale on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
