Bates rowing teams show depth at Williams regatta
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Bates College rowing teams raced against top-notch competition on Saturday in a five-team regatta hosted by Williams College on Lake Onota. The races included Williams, Ithaca, Marist and Coast Guard along with the Bobcats.
The Bates men’s second varsity eight pulled off a rare feat in taking first place out of four boats, including powerhouse Williams, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:14.8, ahead of Williams (6:16.5), Coast Guard and Ithaca. Last week’s men’s 2V8 lineup comprised: Stroke: Andrew Wood (Keene, N.H.). 7: Harry Chung (Naperville, Ill.). 6: Jordy Winslow (Wilton, Conn.). 5: Andre Gobbo (Chesterfield, N.H.). 4: Peter C. Miller (New York, N.Y.). 3: Matt Johns (Seaford, N.Y.). 2: Joseph Nowak (Brunswick, Maine). bow: Charles Carey (Lincoln, Mass.). cox: Gabe Silverman (West Hartford, Conn.).
Bates finished fourth out of five strong boats in the Men’s 1V8 race, covering the 2,000 meters in 6:19.2. Last Sunday’s lineup for the boat comprised: Stroke: Peter K. Miller (Philadelphia, Pa.). 7: James Grant (Chevy Chase, Md.). 6: Graham Pearson-c (Irvington, N.Y.). 5: Cory Sanderson-c (West Newton, Mass.). 4: Glenn Kelly (Chevy Chase, Md.). 3: Peter Haley (Cos Cob, Conn.). 2: Dan LaFontaine (Concord, N.H.). bow: Oliver Scholle (Chestnut Hill, Mass.). cox: Jack Mulvaney (Bow, N.H.).
The Bates women’s varsity eight, which rose to No. 2 in the CRCA/US Rowing Division III rankings this week, behind only Williams and a single point ahead of Ithaca, was nipped at the finish line by Ithaca for second place, 6:54.7 to 6:56.9. Both boats were within reach of first-place williams (6:48.3), and well ahead of fourth-place Marist (7:13.3). The boat’s lineup last at last week’s President’s Cup was: Stroke: Haley Sive (Glenville, N.Y.). 7: Danica Doroski-c (Wayne, Pa.). 6: Rebecca Waldo (Dracut, Mass.). 5: Elizabeth Sonshine (Short Hills, N.J.). 4: Amy Jacks (Baltimore, Md.). 3: Phoebe Reed (Brooklyn, N.Y.). 2: Alison Frye-c (Duxbury, Mass.). bow: Ellen Patterson-c (St. Louis Park, Minn.). cox: Lindsay Thomson (West Hartford, Conn.).
Bates got a measure of revenge in the women’s 2V8 race, taking second place behind Williams and 2.8 seconds ahead of Ithaca, 7:09.1 to 7:11.9. Bates’ 2V8 lineup last Sunday was: Stroke: Allison DiSalvo (Lowell, Mass.). 7: Davina Dukuly (Lowell, Mass.). 6: Amanda Goss (Bainbridge Island, Wash.). 5: Kelsey Dion (Truckee, Calif.). 4: Emma White (Bainbridge Island, Wash.). 3: Hannah Richardson (Concord, Mass.). 2: Catherine Tuttle (Pittsford, N.Y.). bow: Caroline Webb (Tiburon, Calif.). cox: Nora Collins (Kensington, Md.).
Bates also placed third out of four in the men’s varsity fours race, a mere 0.4 seconds behind second-place Williams, 7:17.2 to 7:17.6. The Bates women fielded a boat in the women’s novice fours and placed third out of four boats, behind Williams and Marist but ahead of Coast Guard.
Bates rowing heads to Worcester, Mass., on Saturday, May 1 for the New England Rowing Championships.
